How to wash a mattress cover?

A mattress cover is a barrier that protects your mattress from stains, dust mites, sweat, and other influences that could cause odor, unsightly appearance, or damage to the mattress. How to wash a mattress cover? The cover can be easily unzipped and washed to ensure it is clean and fresh again. However, not everyone may have done this before, so let’s break down the correct procedure.

How often should you wash the mattress cover?

This is a very individual matter. If you are allergic or spend more time in bed, do not hesitate to wash the cover every two months. If you are not allergic and your bedroom is as clean as an operating room, washing twice a year is sufficient. Of course, it is advisable to wash the cover of the mattress when it suddenly gets soiled, for example after spilling drinks or contamination with urine or blood. You will also appreciate more frequent washing during the summer months when you sweat more. If you sleep with pets or treat your bed as a picnic zone, it's also a good idea to consider more frequent washing.

How to proceed when washing?

Washing the mattress cover is an important part of maintaining your bedding, which helps keep hygiene and prolong the life of the mattress. The correct procedure depends on the cover material and the manufacturer's instructions. Below are general steps that will help you accomplish this task effectively.

1. Check the label and prepare the cover

Before washing, always check the label on the cover for specific instructions. You will find out whether the cover is machine washable or whether it requires hand washing. Then carefully remove the cover from the mattress. If the cover has a zipper, unzip it to make removal easy and to prevent damaging the material.

2. Remove dirt and stains before washing

If there are stains on the cover, it is recommended to treat them before washing. Use a mild detergent or a special stain remover that is suitable for the fabric type. Gently wipe the stains with a damp cloth, but avoid aggressive scrubbing that could damage the fabric.

3. Washing in a machine or by hand

If the cover is designed to be washed in a machine, set the program for gentle washing at low temperatures (usually 30–40 °C). Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softeners that could damage water-repellent properties or the fabric structure. For hand washing, immerse the cover in a tub with lukewarm water and mild detergent, then gently wash and thoroughly rinse it.

4. Drying the cover

After washing, it is important to dry the cover properly. Avoid tumble drying unless explicitly allowed by the manufacturer, as high temperatures can damage elastic fibers or special surface treatments. It is best to hang the cover in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Ensure that the cover is completely dry before putting it back on the mattress to prevent mold.
