How often should you change your mattress and how to tell when it has served its time

Why is it important to regularly change your mattress?

A mattress affects sleep quality, back health, and overall body regeneration. A good mattress provides proper support for the spine, distributes body weight evenly, and helps minimize pressure on the joints. During sleep, muscles, tissues, and the nervous system regenerate – and the mattress plays a key role in this process. If it is inadequate, the body cannot relax, sleep is interrupted, and we wake up tired in the morning. It is important to realize that a mattress is not indestructible. Over time, it wears out and stops providing the necessary support. Every night we exert pressure on it, sweat, and gradually it accumulates dust, moisture, and microorganisms. Even the highest quality mattress loses its properties over time – it loses elasticity, support, and hygienic safety. A sagging mattress negatively affects not only sleep quality but also our health.

How often should you change mattresses? The general recommendation is to change your mattress approximately every 7–10 years. The exact duration depends on the type of mattress, how it is used, and the care it receives. Here you can read more about how to care for a mattress. An important factor is also the user’s weight, frequency of use (for instance, in guest beds, the lifespan may be longer), and the environment in which the mattress is placed.

How often to change the mattress? Average lifespan of different types of mattresses

  • Foam mattresses – approximately 6–8 years. Foam mattresses, popular for their softness and adaptability, have a lifespan of about 6–8 years. After this time, they often lose shape, support, and elasticity. It is important to air them out and protect them from excessive moisture.
  • Pocket and spring mattresses – last 8–10 years. Classic spring mattresses, especially pocket ones, tend to be more durable. Quality models can last up to ten years. However, it's necessary to monitor whether the springs are starting to squeak or are breaking.
  • Latex mattresses – can last 10+ years. Latex is a very durable material, and mattresses made from it can last more than ten years. However, they require regular airing as they are prone to mold in humid environments.
  • Health and orthopedic mattressesHealth mattresses are often designed for specific health needs, typically made from high-quality materials. Their lifespan can be longer, but regular state checks are also important – especially regarding firmness, hygiene, and functionality of individual zones.

Sagging mattress: How to tell if your mattress is wearing out?

  • Visible sagging – One of the most noticeable signs of a sagging mattress is unevenness. If you notice dips, lumps, or it feels "sunken", it is losing its ability to evenly distribute body weight.
  • Back and joint pain - Do you wake up with back pain or feel generally achy? An old mattress, which no longer provides proper support, may be to blame. Especially people with spine issues should be particularly sensitive to these signals – a bad mattress can exacerbate health problems. Read our article "How to choose a mattress for back pain".
  • Loss of firmness and support - Your body should not "sink" into the mattress. If you feel like you are lying in a soft pit and your spine is not in the correct position, it's time to consider replacement.
  • Noise during movement - Does the mattress start to creak or make other sounds with each turn? This is typical for older spring mattresses where there has been wear on the internal structure.
  • Allergies and odor - Over the years, mattresses can become ideal environments for dust mites, bacteria, and mold. If you suffer from frequent allergies, coughing, or notice a musty smell coming from the mattress, the hygienic qualities may no longer be satisfactory. Sometimes a new mattress isn't necessary, just thorough cleaning. More information can be found in our article "How to thoroughly clean a mattress". However, if problems persist, it's better to invest in a new one.
